Elected officials from around the Washington region are responding to the airstrike ordered by President Donald Trump that killed Iranian Major Gen. Qassem Soleimani early Friday.
The drone airstrike occurred in the early morning hours near Baghdad International Airport in Iraq. Iran Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Hassan Rouhani have promised “harsh retaliation” in response to the assassination.
Soleimani was the leader of the secretive Quds Force, a unit of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps. His assassination comes days after thousands of pro-Iran protesters stormed an American embassy in Baghdad.
Rep. Don Beyer (D):
“The President’s actions put American military and civilian personnel abroad in grave danger. I am deeply concerned for them, and urge swift de-escalation. The American people do not want war with Iran, and Congress has not and should not authorize it.”
