Beyer Votes For Legislation To Support Ukraine And Sanction Russia For Invasion
Washington,
March 10, 2022
Rep. Don Beyer yesterday voted for legislation that would provide nearly $14 billion in funding for defensive aid and humanitarian assistance for Ukraine, and separate legislation to impose new sanctions on Russia. “This week the House took strong, bipartisan action to support Ukraine in its defense against an illegal, unprovoked Russian invasion,” said Beyer. “I strongly support continued defensive aid and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine as President Biden continues to lead diplomatic engagement with our allies to buttress Ukrainian resistance and sanction Russian aggression. I will also continue to work with my colleagues to shield Americans from the worst effects of Putin’s price hike. This legislation sends the firm message that Congress and the American people stand with Ukraine.” The Suspending Energy Imports from Russia Act, passed with bipartisan support on Wednesday night, bans the import of Russian oil and energy products into the United States – cutting off a major source of revenue for the Russian government. It would also take steps to review Russia’s access to the World Trade Organization and explore how the United States can further diminish Russia in the global economy. Additionally, it reauthorizes and strengthens the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, enabling the United States to impose additional sanctions for the Russian government’s heinous attacks on Ukrainian civilians. Text of the bill is available here. The Omnibus funding bill, also passed with bipartisan support on Wednesday night, includes $13.6 billion in humanitarian, military and economic assistance for the people of Ukraine, adding to the more than $1.4 billion in assistance that the United States has provided to Ukraine since 2021. A summary of the new funding measures in the legislation is available here. A list of resources is available here for individuals seeking to help. |
