Beyer Statement On Administration AI Initiatives

Rep. Don Beyer, vice-chair of the bipartisan Congressional AI Caucus, today welcomed the Biden-Harris Administration’s announcement of new initiatives to address advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and called for further education and engagement by Congress to set comprehensive, long-term policies to govern the development of AI.

“President Biden and Vice President Harris are taking a smart, forward-looking approach to craft early government responses to recent advances in artificial intelligence. I encourage the administration to continue working with scientists, developers, and business leaders to ensure safe, responsible use of this technology, and to fund federal research and development efforts that maintain American leadership in this key area,” said Rep. Beyer. “At the same time, it is important to understand that there are limits to what the Executive Branch can do here on its own. The implications for the rapid expansion of AI-based technologies in our country are profound, and Congress must do all it can to maximize the societal benefits while working to address the many potential downsides. Achieving these ends will require more education of members in both parties and both chambers, which is the objective of the bipartisan Congressional AI Caucus.”

Last week the Biden-Harris Administration announced new actions to promote responsible AI innovation, and Vice President Harris met CEOs of companies leading AI innovation to urge them to keep Americans’ safety and rights in mind as they develop new technology.

Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA) is Vice Chair of the bipartisan Congressional Artificial Intelligence Caucus, and served for eight years on the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. He is currently attending George Mason University as a part time student completing coursework towards the pursuit of a master’s degree in machine learning, in part to help inform his work on AI in Congress.
