SEEC Condemns Trump Administration’s Unlawful Attack on EPA Endangerment Finding
Washington,
February 27, 2025
The leaders of the House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC), including Co-Chairs Reps. Doris Matsui, Mike Quigley, and Paul Tonko and Vice Chairs Reps. Don Beyer, Suzanne Bonamici, Sean Casten, Mike Levin, and Chellie Pingree, sent a letter to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin, condemning his reported recommendation that the White House strike down the landmark EPA Endangerment Finding, which has for over 14 years followed the science and protected Americans from planet-warming pollution. “Under the Clean Air Act—our nation’s foundational law for regulating air pollution—carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gases are explicitly and unambiguously air pollutants. Because EPA has repeatedly determined based on the overwhelming scientific record that they endanger public health and welfare, the law requires you to regulate them. You simply cannot legally repeal the endangerment finding or the current standards for vehicles, power plants, and oil and gas operations. The scientific evidence that greenhouse gases endanger public health and welfare was clear in 2009 — when EPA made its foundational Endangerment Finding — and it has grown only more extensive and alarming since then,” the letter stated. “In your confirmation hearing you committed to listen to the scientists, to follow the law, and to advance EPA’s core mission to protect public health and the environment. We at SEEC remind you of this commitment and of your oath to faithfully discharge your duties to protect Americans from pollution. We urge you to follow through on your word and preserve EPA’s Endangerment Finding, which has for over 14 years served to protect Americans from climate change and climate-related extreme weather. The American people are counting on you.” The letter can be found here. |
