Arlington’s congressman has pledged to support a resolution limiting U.S. military involvement in Iran. U.S. Rep. Don Beyer (D) cast his support yesterday (Tuesday) for a war powers resolution that would prohibit any use of the U.S. military in “hostilities against the Islamic Republic of Iran” without a declaration of war or explicit authorization. Reps. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) announced plans to introduce the resolution yesterday (Tuesday). Thirteen other Democratic representatives joined Beyer as cosponsors. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) introduced companion legislation in the Senate on Monday. “The President cannot take our country to war without authorization from Congress,” Beyer told ARLnow. “The United States should not allow Netanyahu to drag us into his war with Iran, and if Donald Trump remains intent on putting Americans in harm’s way, Congress must reassert its authority over war powers to stop him.” The resolution would underscore that Congress has sole power to declare war and that it has not done so in Iran. However, it would allow the government to continue “intelligence, counterintelligence, or investigative activities relating to threats in or emanating from Iran.” The United States would still be able to defend itself from any “imminent attacks.” President Donald Trump initially distanced himself from Israel’s surprise attack on Friday that triggered the conflict with Iran. In recent days, however, he has hinted at greater American involvement, saying he wants something “much bigger” than a ceasefire. The United States has also sent more military aircraft and warships to the region. Yesterday, Trump demanded “UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER” in a social media post and warned Ayatollah Ali Khamenei that the United States knows where he is but has no plans to kill him, “at least not for now.” Khamenei has rejected U.S. calls to surrender.
