Dem responds to Trump tweetstorm: He woke up in an 'authoritarian mood'

The Hill

Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) criticized President Trump on Tuesday for lashing out at the special counsel investigation and at NFL players who protest social justice issues in a series of early morning tweets.

“Waking in an authoritarian mood, the President again denies athletes’ free expression of opposition to police brutality, and attacks an investigation he demanded in fear that it won’t produce his required insult,” Beyer tweeted.

The Virginia Democrat noted that Trump did not acknowledge those killed in Puerto Rico by recent storms.

Trump fired off a series of tweets Tuesday morning taking aim at a number of topics that have been the subject of his ire.

He criticized the NFL for its national anthem policy hours after the president disinvited the Philadelphia Eagles from the White House. The team planned to send less than 10 players to the White House.

The president has frequently bashed the NFL for allowing players to protest social justice issues during the national anthem. On Tuesday, he declared the league’s policy allowing players to remain in the locker room was “as disrespectful to our country as kneeling.”

No Eagles players took a knee during last season, but a few players raised their fist in the air during the national anthem prior to each game. Multiple players said after winning the Super Bowl that they would not visit the White House if invited.

The president also resurfaced his complaint about Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ decision to recuse himself from the Russia probe.

He went on to blame Democrats for his own administration’s policy that separates children from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump's chief of staff, John Kelly, and other administration officials have defended the policy.
