Del. Norton, Rep. Beyer draft bill for police body cams after shooting of Bijan Ghaisar

ABC 7

Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) and U.S. Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA) have completed the drafting of a bill that pushes for body/dash cams for federal officers after U.S. Park Police fatally shot Bijan Ghaisar.

Ghaisar left the scene of a minor accident and was later chased by Park Police. He pulled over and slowly pulled away from them three times. But the third time they fired nine shots killing the 25-year-old man on Nov. 17, 2017.

In the days following the shooting, Park Police released very little information. The FBI took over the investigation and declined to provide details of what happened public.

Attorneys for the Ghaisar family filed a lawsuit that described the shooting as "egregious, senseless, and unlawful" and spoke of "two out of control law enforcement officers," according to a story from ABC7's Tim Barber and the Associated Press.

Ghaisar's parents, along with friends and supporters, held candles along Fort Hunt Road at its intersection with Alexandria Avenue.

Last week, Beyer attended a vigil for Ghaisar and told ABC7 News that he learned the FBI’s investigation finished six weeks ago.

Beyer said the results were turned over to the U.S. Justice Department, which would decide on possible charges against the police officers who were involved.

Beyer said Justice Department decisions can sometimes take years, and his office is pressuring it to move faster on this case, even if it means adding more people to work on it.
