House Passes Broad Infrastructure Legislation; Bill Includes Beyer Community Funding Requests, Wildlife Conservation Legislation, Suicide Prevention Amendment

The House today passed the Investing in a New Vision for the Environment and Surface Transportation [INVEST] in America Act, ambitious surface transportation legislation that would pave the way to rebuilding America’s infrastructure. The bill contained top priorities for Northern Virginia and legislative measures sponsored by Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA), including:

  • All of Beyer’s Member-designated transportation project requests, which would fund key Northern Virginia transportation infrastructure projects (full list below);
  • The bipartisan Wildlife Corridors Conservation Act, which would authorize federal agencies to designate National Wildlife Corridors on federal lands to create a comprehensive corridor network to boost biodiversity, protect ecosystems, and prevent the extinction of key species;
  • And a measure originating from Beyer’s bipartisan Barriers To Suicide Act directing the completion of a feasibility study to determine the effectiveness of barriers and nets on physical infrastructure other than bridges to prevent suicide.

“The INVEST in America Act project is strong legislation that would boost job growth and bring America’s infrastructure into the 21st Century,” said Rep. Beyer. “I am thrilled to see all of the regional transportation projects which I requested receive full funding. These projects would benefit our community and create jobs in Northern Virginia. Additionally, I thank Chairman DeFazio and Chairman Grijalva for their support for the bipartisan Wildlife Corridors Conservation Act. With one in five animal and plant species at risk of extinction, this bill would give so many species across the country a fighting chance at survival. Finally, I also want to highlight the inclusion once again of a measure to pilot suicide prevention barriers, a worthy endeavor deserving further exploration which studies suggest could save lives. These are important pieces of legislation, and together with the larger bill, would make an enormous positive difference in my district and across the country.”
